NC Treehouse Builders Give Salvaged Flooring New Life

“I have a friend in Delaware who was taking down an old grist-mill,” recounts World Treehouses client Connie.

The mill's historic owner was actually Susan B. Anthony's uncle. "My friend offered the flooring for use in our treehouse. ‘Bring your daughters and I'll teach you guys how to pull it all up without damaging it,’ he said.”

Grateful for her friend’s generosity, Connie enlisted her teenage daughters, and together they made the trek to do the hard work of salvaging the precious old floors. “The grist mill still had a little bit of flour still on some of the floorboards, even. We ultimately found the date on the cornerstone—1770. Wow! That made it really special.”

The effort went well, and they returned with a truck-full of historic wood and great memories.

“I was over the moon about the idea of using these boards. I was holding my breath, hoping that Adam could do something with them. And he was thrilled!” she said of lead builder, Adam Laufer. "And so the girls and I cleaned all this wood up, and Adam told us how to do it." The World Treehouses team incorporated the tongue-and-groove flooring in the project with great success.

“It's just so beautiful to have that history attached to our treehouse.”
